Shots fired at Illinois Valley Fire District personnel

One fire official is speaking out about the danger of the job, after shots were fired at a member of the Illinois Valley Fire District.

The incident occurred after the report of a fire came in after a community meeting in Selma Monday night.

A nearby member of IVFD went to check it out and was allegedly shot at by a transient soon after arrival.

No one was injured, but Fire Chief Dennis Hoke says it's a recurring problem.

"We don't have any protection, we're not law enforcement, we're not in that role," says Chief Hoke. "We're in the fire and emergency medical services side of our business, and we're there to help. "

Chief Hoke says law enforcement resources are stretched thin, with back-up having to travel from grants pass into the Illinois Valley after daylight hours.
