Police ID 14-year-old boy struck and killed by SUV in southern Oregon


[UPDATE Thursday 2:15 p.m.]: Josephine County Sheriff's Office identified the 14-year-old as Joseph "Joey" Jones of Grants Pass.


A 14-yer-old skateboarder died after being struck by a car in Grants Pass on Tuesday night.

Oregon State Police says the teenager was skating downhill on Majestic Drive, when he entered Elk Lane he was hit by a Mercedes SUV.

According to both Rural Metro - Josephine County, and a witness to the event the skateboarder was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash.

RMJC was called to the scene at 6:50 PM Tuesday, it was dark outside at the time of the crash.

The skater died he was surrounded by a group of friends close to his age.

A witness to the event says seeing the panic of the skater's friends was the most disturbing part of the scene.

"The worse was listening to his friend being in shock and everything. That's what really got to me," said Ernie Elner, who lives close to where the crash happened.

Prior to the arrival of emergency crews, bystanders attempted to save the skateboarders life through CPR. Emergency crews announced him dead on scene.

The SUV was occupied by 32-year-old Mallory Perez of Grants Pass and her daughter. Police say, Perez is cooperating with the investigation and believe there is no wrong doing.

Rural Metro Fire- Josephine County wanted to extend their condolences to all involved in the crash.

"It's a very unfortunate incident to happen to everyone involved. Including to the person driving the car, to the people who were with the kid when he got hit, and of course the family members who had to deal with it. All of the first-responders are extending their condolences and are very sorry that this had to happen," said Austin Prince, Division Chief of Rural Metro Fire- Josephine County.
