Some new jobs have illegal marijuana to thank in Siskiyou County

Many shelves have been wiped clean at G & G Ace Hardware in Yreka, California, Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016. (KTVL/Ariana Rakhshani).

YREKA, Calif.-- Hardware stores in Siskiyou County agree, it is hard to keep up with the demand for gardening tools.

Owners said ever since the rise of illegal marijuana grows, they have had to double some of their orders. The extra business allowed some owners to hire more workers.

"I would say almost all my employees are very happy to be working," G & G Ace Hardware Owner Jeff Bourke said. "Siskiyou County can be a very tough county to live in and support your family."

Despite the added jobs, Sheriff Jon Lopey said the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages. He said not only is it illegal, but it also hurts the environment.

"There's a lot of illegal water diversions," Sheriff Lopey said. "There's a lot of pollution to the land."
