MEDFORD, Ore. -- Students in a criminology class at Southern Oregon University got a first-hand look at a greenway clean-up on Thursday afternoon.

It's a way for the students to learn about what law enforcement has to deal with in our area.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office had to clean out homeless camps and pick up lots of trash on the north side of Medford.

"To actually get out of the classroom and see it first-hand," professor Tiffany Morey said. "Not just talk about it but to see it and see how the officers and deputies are responding to different situations and in this situation the homeless is huge."

The professor said students also learn important communication skills when officers deal with suspects they are called to.
