Stark back home at Southern Oregon Sports Commission Banquet

Recognizing local athletes, officials, coaches, mentors and advocates, the sports community enjoyed the 5th annual Southern Oregon Sports Commission Banquet on Thursday night at the Santo Community Center in Medford.

Local native and two-time tennis Grand Slam doubles-winner Jonathan Stark was the featured keynote speaker.

Stark reminisced about his days in southern Oregon, growing up questioning a move to a larger city to succeed and thanked those that shaped his professional tennis career.

The Mail Tribune's Top 10 Sports Stories of 2018 were featured in a video presentation with Crater baseball taking the top honors.

New for the annual event, the 'official of the year' was given to Jerry Eklund, who is entering his 50th year in High School sports officiating when baseball season rolls around in the spring.

Former Crater and now Oregon State wrestler Logan Meek was named 'Male Athlete of the Year'.

St. Mary's standout soccer players Meghan Michels and Maddie Wheelock were named 'co-Female Athletes of the Year'.

Wendy Werthaiser received the 'Spirit of Competition' award and Wanda & Sherm Olsrud were recognized with the 'Sports Advocate' award, accepted by their son, Steve.
