Thief flips truck in wrong-way I-5 crash

A truck thief took Oregon State Police and Josephine County Sheriff's deputies on a wrong-way pursuit ending with a crash on I-5 near Grants Pass on Thursday night.

A deputy located the stolen Toyota Tacoma picked around 6:30 p.m. in the Merlin area.

According to Josephine County Sheriff's Office, deputies pursued after David Wayne Smith refused a traffic stop and went the wrong way on the Merlin off-ramp.

OSP intervened as the vehicle approached the Grants Pass area. Smith crashed the vehicle but was not injured. No other crashes resulted from the wrong-way pursuit.

Deputies tell News 10 that Smith had knowledge the vehicle was stolen and he had numerous out-of-county warrants.

Smith is lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges of Felony Attempt to Elude Police, Reckless Driving, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Endangering and Felony Possession of Methamphetamine.
