Washington and Oregon send about 1,000 firefighters to battle Alaska wildfires

PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon and Washington are sending about 1,000 firefighters to battle dozens of wildfires in Alaska, the Bureau of Land Management said.

The BLM says 41 wildfires are currently burning on approximately 600,000 acres in Alaska. There are currently more than 2,100 firefighters and support personnel battling the blazes.

Washington and Oregon are also sending fire managers and helicopters to assist with the fire suppression efforts.

Alaska is currently rates at the most severe national preparedness level, at a 5, while the Northwest is at the lowest, a 1.
