Local 'climate strike' events planned
Students in Ashland, Medford and Phoenix are expected to walk out of classes Friday and take part in an event billed as “the largest worldwide collective action in history” for climate action awareness.
In Ashland, youth from the Ashland School District are expected to convene from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 20, at the downtown Plaza, according to a press release from Climate Action Now. The students are being asked to meet outside of Ashland High School and march to the Plaza together.
Adults who want to support the youth are asked to gather at the Plaza at 10:30 a.m.
In Medford, students from across the city are expected to meet at Vogel Plaza, 15 S. Central Ave., Medford, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the release said.
In Phoenix, students from Phoenix and Talent are expected to walk out of classes from 10:30 a.m. to noon and converge at Phoenix City Hall, 112 W. Second St., Phoenix.
“On Sept. 20, millions of people of all ages around the world will walk out of their classes, jobs and homes as part of a global strike to demand climate action now,” the release said.
Friday will launch a week of global strikes and climate action awareness events, three days before the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York City.
The Ashland rally will migrate from the Plaza to the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park for an all-ages community “climate-action picnic and celebration of a sustainable future” from noon to 3:45 p.m., the release said. Food trucks will be on site, and attendees are asked to bring their own picnic, cups, plates and cutlery to ensure a zero-waste event.
The event will feature music, art and information about ways to take personal and collective action, the release said.
Other events scheduled throughout the Rogue Valley Friday include a Southern Oregon Climate Fiesta from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Pear Blossom Park in Medford organized by Rogue Climate, and a Global Climate Strike at 4:30 p.m. at the Josephine County Courthouse in Grants Pass.
