Oregon State Police investigates homicide, suspicious death near Oregon-California border

[UPDATE 4:18] Jackson County Sheriff's Office has positively identified both the shooter and shooting victim, but will not release any names until the next of kin have been notified.

Both SB lanes of I-5 at the border have been opened as of 3:08 PM on Saturday. The victim of the shooting has been identified so far as a restaurant worker from Callahan's Lodge.

Law enforcement first received the calls around 6:45 Saturday morning. The first call came in from the driver who ran over the shooter on I-5. Minutes later, a second call came in about a suspicious cardiac arrest with the caller saying a male was on the floor bleeding from his head. It was later determined to be a gunshot wound.

[UPDATE: 12:30] Oregon State Police are investigating a homicide and suspicious death that they believe are related to each other Saturday near the Oregon-California in Jackson County, Ore.

OSP confirmed two deaths: one at Callahan's Lodge in Ashland and the other I-5 SB mile post 1. There is currently no threat to the public, as police say the male deceased at mile post one is the suspect in the investigation.

OSP incident commander says the suspect parked his car diagonally along the freeway, and proceeded to get out and shoot at oncoming cars. The commander says the suspect was ran over by a car that he shot at.

The investigation is ongoing.


Oregon State Police Troopers responded to a call of someone shooting at cars on Interstate 5 Saturday morning near the Oregon-California border at mile post 1 in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Major Assault Death Investigation Unit (MADIU) was activated in response to the shooting. One death has been confirmed regarding the shooting on I-5. Police are currently investigating another confirmed death at Callahans Lodge, which they believe is connected to the shooting on I-5.

Police say there is no more information at this time, as the shooting investigation is on-going.
