When the Klamath Falls Gems take the field for their eighth season, their manager will be no stranger to either Klamath Falls or Kiger Stadium.
Nick Gauna, who has coached at Oregon Tech University for the past three seasons, has been named manager for the 2018 season. He also has coached summer teams in the Mountain West Summer Collegiate Baseball League and Southern California Collegiate Baseball League.
“I’m really excited about having Nick as our coach,” Gems owner Joe O’Connor said.
O’Connor said that, in addition to Gauna, the Gems have signed upward of 20 players.
While at Oregon Tech, Gauna served as pitching coach for Hustlin’ Owls teams which made steady improvement each of his three seasons, 2015-2017. He served as interim head coach for part of last season. The 2017 pitching staff had Tech’s lowest earned run average in several years, and the most strike outs in almost a decade. Gauna also was OIT’s recruiting coordinator.
A graduate of Friends University in Kansas, Gauna has a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He currently is working on a master’s degree in business education at Kansas’ Emporia State University.
